As children we all draw and paint and create grand masterpieces from nothing. Yet the older we become, the more we seem to lose confidence in our abilities. Our goal is to nurture our students' natural artistic inclinations by offering artistic experiences in a wide variety of mediums.

A home computer would be very helpful. Students will have extensive time online on their own to work on projects and examine other's work. Therefore a certain high level of maturity is a prerequisite. We will use numerous software and examine the work of everyone from Melies to Disney to Tolkien to Red Grooms. Students should be very self directed and interested in the subject to appreciate this program. Drawing talent is not a necessity but is not a hindrance as we can use a stylus (computer drawing tool).

Drama & Music
|
Leaves of Learning Drama teaches skills that last a lifetime. Play production involves more than memorizing lines and performing on stage. Students come away with enhanced life-skills: self confidence, self awareness, initiative, responsibility, dedication, leadership, creative thinking, group dynamics and group decision-making.
Learning about body language and carriage helps students become more effective presenters. In addition, students get lots of practice communicating to an audience-learning how to project, use proper diction, articulate, control dialog tempo, and use emphasis and pauses to achieve dramatic effect.
All three drama classes achieve these elements through role-playing, drama games and improvisations during class. Each group also stages a performance at the end of the year-providing students opportunities to practice theater skills such as set design, set decorations, publicity, costuming, make-up and sound effects.

This section is for those students who have never taken private lessons on one of the following instruments: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone or Percussion.
During the summer, there will be a couple of meetings that interested Parents and Students will need to attend. At these meetings, I will go over how to select an instrument for your child to play, how to obtain that instrument, and what to expect during the year.
Classes will be divided into the Woodwind Class (Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone), the Brass Class (Trumpet and Trombone), and Percussion Class. Depending on the number of participants, some of these classes may be combined. These classes will meet one hour once a week.
**A note to those parents and students who have never been a part of a band: I would like to reassure you that even though some of the information may be confusing to you (it is an unknown you are dealing with!), I have experience with beginner band programs and will help you throughout it all. And, I would also like to mention that purchasing an instrument is an investment (yes, it can be expensive) but there are many wonderful music stores in our area that offer monthly payment programs (a rent-to-own deal!). I highly recommend this option!

History & Social Studies

The goal of our history program is to help bring the past alive for our students. In the younger groups we do this by offering classes that actively involve students in reliving the past - through play-acting, dressing up, stories, crafts, games and activities. At this age, children are fascinated by learning about the people of long ago: how they lived, what they ate, what they wore, where they slept, and how the children were raised.
For our teens, we strive to generate a fascination of history through lively discussions, compelling reading, and reports. By using "living books" as opposed to textbooks, our students are treated to the many "stay up late to finish" biographical, fiction and non-fiction books, stories and articles available. During class time, students are challenged to look at the past from many different angles, to share their opinions and findings with others, and to grow in their understanding of how the past continues to affect us today.
History/Language Arts Unit Studies
We are excited to bring the unit studies approach to LOL! Starting with the 2004/05 program, our Language Arts and History classes will be integrated around a common historical period. In addition, where possible, other teachers will incorporate aspects of the time period into their classes. For example, in some years the history classes will cover the Renaissance & Reformation period. In their Language Arts class, students may be involved in activities such as writing a persuasive letter “selling’ one of Michelangelo’s inventions. In science they may be introduced to Galileo and his astronomic discoveries. In art, they might learn about Giotta and complete their own fresco works. Books for the unit studies classes will be selected based on “real books,” including selections recommended by Greenleaf Press, Beautiful Feet, and Landmark Books. We believe the unit study approach will provide our students with a deeper, more meaningful understanding of how we as a people have come to be where we are today, and how we can learn from the experiences of the past.
Sequence:
As part of our unit studies approach to history and language arts, we’ve developed a five-year rotation of history topics. This rotation will ensure that students enrolled in LOL on a long-term basis will cover a wide variety of historical periods as well as repeat topics—delving more deeply into more advanced concepts as they get older. Our sequence is as follows:
- 2004/05 Renaissance & Reformation 1500-1800
- 2005/06 Early American History 1500-1800
- 2006/07 Modern World History 1800-2000
- 2007/08 Modern American History 1800-2000
- 2008/09 Ancient & Medieval History

Discover the dawn of civilization in this exploration of ancient societies. How did writing develop and change the way rulers led their citizens? What can a culture’s artwork tell us about their history? How did the ancients influence the medieval Eurasians? And what do these all have to do with us now – our government, our economy, our basic human rights? Using hands-on projects including art, construction (and destruction!), games, and simulations, along with meaningful readings from the time, we will study the rise and fall of major societies from the earliest in the Middle East to the “modern” in Italy.

The good old days were not all that good. In fact, they were downright horrible. That's what we'll learn in Horrible History as we explore all the unpleasant, difficult, gross, and fascinating things that probably would have happened to us if we'd lived in a variety of earlier historical eras. We'll read stories, act out short dramas, and play games that give us a taste of what it would be like to work on the Great Wall of China, be discliplined in a Victorian schoolroom, suffer from plague in medieval Europe, starve in early colonial America, be eaten by wild animals in the Roman arena, and be sacrificed atop an Aztec step-pyramid...and then we'll move on to the really bad stuff. We will also explore the lives of many famous people we're glad we weren't, from Tutankhamen to the wives of Henry the VIII.

This class is designed to help students build foundations in language structure, vocabulary, writing, reading and study skills to prepare them for subsequent high school work.
Students will be exposed to a variety of literary genres including short stories, poetry, non-fiction, and various types of novels. Significant emphasis will be placed not only on understanding the differences in genre, but on reading comprehension. Oftentimes teachers take it for granted that students automatically have a grasp on comprehension because most junior high students no longer struggle with accurate reading of words, but current research on reading shows that even very proficient readers need continual work on comprehension. In addition our reading will focus upon character analysis, theme and elements of plot. Our reading materials will represent writers from around the globe. Writing will include learning the conventions of essay writing, creative writing and editing. Grammar, and spelling will be included as part of the necessary conventions for writing. Students will be introduced to a variety of note-taking techniques and begin simple research projects. This class is designed to elicit as much student discussion and creativity as possible. This classroom will be run as much as possible as a workshop, a way of teaching and learning uniquely suited to adolescents of every ability. This workshop approach accommodates adolescents’ needs, invites their independence, and constantly challenges them.
All Literature and Writing classes are multi-age/grade classes and it is expected that most students will stay in the class for two years. The material will be new each year.

Math
|
|
Our philosophy for math can be summed up in two words: real-life. We believe that math is best learned when it is made meaningful and relevant to a student's life. Therefore, our classes are designed to incorporate real world applications and hands-on activities.
We offer a variety of math classes to meet a diversity of needs. For our students 7-9 years, we offer math enrichment classes designed to complement math work being done at home. For our students 9-12 years we offer several specific math concept classes using the Key to…Series. For our students 12-18 years, we offer a comprehensive math program-from pre-algebra through calculus based on the Key Curriculum Discovering… Series. We have used the workbooks and texts published by the Key Curriculum Press for several years, and are impressed with the clear, easy-to-understand progression of concepts. We feel strongly that workbooks and textbooks are not enough-and so a critical part of our math program incorporates in-class group and individual activities and projects that bring meaning to the concepts being learned. Paper and pencil exercises are used as outside work, with class time devoted to real life, hands-on applications of the concepts being taught.
Please note: Many of the math classes have prerequisites. We set these to ensure, as much as possible, that students will have the necessary skills to be successful in each class. Please make sure your child meets all requirements listed for the class. For more information, contact the specific teacher.
In addition, while it is anticipated that each class will cover the topics listed in the class description, this may not always be possible. Here's our philosophy:
- We believe it is important for students to work at their own level.
- Depending on the make-up of the class, each year's class may move at a different pace.
- We consider depth of knowledge more important than breadth. Given a choice between "finishing the book" and delving as deeply into each topic as the students need in order to grasp it fully, we will choose the latter every time.
Therefore, we assume that if a class is unable to "finish the book" by the end of the year, families will be responsible to make sure their child accomplishes any additional material they need to move on to the next level. In January, math teachers send home an outline of what has been covered so far in the course, and what they expect to finish by the end of the year. Private or semi-private math tutoring is usually available from our math teachers during the year and over the summer.

Algebra I -Honors T/TH (13+) 2:00

1.5 Hour Class; 2 days/week
Yearly Materials Fee : $10.00

This class uses the Discovering Algebra book, by Key Curriculum Press which integrates the traditional algebra curriculum with statistics, data analysis, functions, discrete mathematics, geometry, and probability. Students work with data from real-world situations and applications in a curriculum that places algebra in an applications-based context and where investigation precedes introductions of formulas and expressions.
By focusing on exploration, rather than simply naming concepts and completing computation exercises, students will gain a deeper understanding and build skills that last. Learning new material through their own investigations enables students to make meaningful personal connections to the numbers, patterns, arguments, and mathematics they discover. This class makes the transformation from rule-dominated, symbol-oriented manipulation-based algebra to an activity and experiment-based algebra. Word problems relate algebra to everyday situations, which help students understand abstract concepts. Tests are used as a tool for students to assess their own mastery. Texas Instrument 83+ graphing calculator required, but no previous experience with the calculator is necessary. Outside-of-class work is mandatory for this class.
