As children, we all draw and paint and create grand masterpieces from nothing. Yet the older we become, the more we seem to lose confidence in our abilities. Our goal is to nurture our students' natural artistic inclinations by offering artistic experiences in a wide variety of mediums.

Miniature Worlds: Lord of the Rings 1:00
Teacher: Dan Carlson
Outside Work: Minimal
|
Ages: 13 and up
1.25 Hour Class; 1 day/week
Yearly Materials Fee : $65.00
|
In Miniature Worlds, students will learn to assemble and paint 28mm models, and to build dioramic scenery from scratch in the 28mm scale. These models will then be used in a variety of strategy games that allow students to see their miniature worlds come to life interactively. This years' focus is 'The Lord of the Rings'--specifically the first part of the trilogy--'The Fellowship of the Ring'. Students will read through the book over the course of the year as they create models and games inspired by the text. Will Frodo escape the pursuit of the Ringwraiths? Will Tom Bombadil help the hobbits evade the evil of the Barrow Downs? Will Gandalf survive the dangers of Moria? Not only will students find out what the preceding questions actually mean, they'll be able to answer them through miniature recreation of these pivotal scenes from one of the most popular books of the 20th century.
A secondary focus of the class will be the life of JRR Tolkien, and the events and literature that shaped him. From time to time, we'll also be exploring topics like World War 1 and the European Dark Ages through our model-building and gaming (as time permits).
This class is offered in two sections each Friday. Students are encouraged to sign up for both sections if possible: many of the projects we'll be building and the games we'll be playing are very time-consuming, and two classes a week will allow students to make significant progress quickly. That being said, students who can only attend one of the two class sections are welcome to sign up, and will get to enjoy as much modeling and gaming as their schedule permits.
